‘Hope for Life Project’ ® - Completing Schoolwork

Ica Family Vacation at Neve Ilan Hotel

The project pairs mentors with the appropriate skills, who have undergone special training, with young cancer patients who are often absent from school because of their disease. The tutors help the children stay on track with the curriculum being taught at school. The project’s main goal is to ensure that these children do not fall behind because of their disease. The ‘Hope for Life’® project commences every year in July. The ICA’s social workers maintain ongoing contact with the families and children, who cannot attend school regularly due to their condition, in order to make sure they have a supportive environment and can go back to school when the time is right. Some 100 students from all over Israel are active in the project, helping these children catch up with schoolwork, so that upon returning to school, they will not have to struggle to keep up with the curriculum. The students are also in contact with the children’s schools to help them with the current material studied, which they missed because of the disease and treatments. The responses of the mentors and the families are very enthusiastic and provide the ICA with the drive to continue this excellent program. This year, about 385 children participated in the project, with a total of 100,000 tutoring hours provided during the entire year. The ‘Hope for Life’® project is funded by the Israel Cancer Association and Michal Kahalani , ICA’s Human Resources Coordinator is in charge of liaison with the students, while Linda Yadai is in charge of assigning the students and liaison with the families.

Each August, the Israel Cancer Association hosts its annual family vacation, with more than 90 families participating. The children and their parents arrived at Neve Ilan Hotel for three days of fun, rest, and respite from the disease and treatments, to allow them to rejuvenate and gather strength to continue facing the long, complex trajectory ahead. During the vacation, the children and their families enjoyed live shows, fire acts, table games, Gymboree, fountain pool and swimming pool.
