Israel Railways, the national heavy rail operator, is a government owned company that serves as the implementation and operational arm of the Ministry of Transportation. The railway in Israel began its operations in the late 19th century with the laying of the first track (Jaffa-Jerusalem line) during the Ottoman rule. It later operated under the British Mandate and with the establishment of the State of Israel, its facilities and assets were transferred to the control of the State of Israel, when the company was declared: “Israel Railways”. Israel Railways has 69 stations across the country and operates around 600 trains daily, connecting the major metropolitan areas in Israel as well as cities, towns and rural communities, across the length and breadth of the State of Israel. As part of the railway’s vision to provide high-quality, safe and green service, large-scale infrastructure projects are being promoted, the main one of which is the project to switch from diesel-powered locomotives to electric locomotives. As part of the project, 450 km of track are being electrified and new, fast, environmentally friendly and modern electric locomotives and carriages are being purchased. As part of the strategic plan for 2040, the railway is expected to make 300 million trips a year. Many projects are underway to expand the rail network and add new passenger stations.
