life story as a source of inspiration. Through these activities, we hope to ful fill Laila’s wishes for the collection she has donated. The Laila Schwartz collec tion seeks to create a dialogue that is not limited to the field of art, rather, it prompts social and educational dialogue. In this, Laila’s aspirations for the future of her collection blend well with the col lege’s vision for the role of art on our campuses and in our programs. Part of this vision has been realized in the opening of The Other Side gallery, in the heart of the Eastern Campus. Un like the more typical white walls and cube-shaped halls of a museum, and like the library, the Other Side gallery creates

casual opportunities for exposure to art with the intent of arousing the interest of random visitors traversing the space. It hopes to make them stop and look, to entice them to hold a dialogue about art, which, it is hoped, will invariably culmi nate in a dialogue about identity, toler ance and multiple points of view. Behind the scenes The process of curating the Laila Schwartz Collection has been document ed through the lens by Stella Carasso, as part of a project for her studies in Pho tography. For Stella, the importance of this documentation was to expose the work behind the scenes involved in set

ting up the exhibition, a fascinating pro cess in itself, usually invisible to the pub lic. However, she soon became involved herself and her documentation quickly became a photographic record of her involvement with curatorial choices and her work with the team, using her per spective as a photographer, providing her understanding of the curatorial space. Stella exchanged her initial role of pho tographer, a passive observer, for an ac tive role, moving between standing be hind, and in front of the lens.
