Paris in the mid-20th century. Raymonde Chandebise, after years of wedded bliss, begins to doubt the fidelity of her husband, Victor Emmanuel. She confides her doubts to her old friend Lucienne and they decide to put him to the test. They write him a letter, in Lucienne's handwriting, from a fictitious and anonymous admirer, requesting a rendezvous at the La & Li Hotel where prominent people come to have dubious encounters. Raymonde intends to confront her husband there. When Victor Emmanuel receives the letter, he believes the invitation was meant for his best friend Tournel, a handsome bachelor who, unknown to Victor Emmanuel, has his eye on Raymonde. Tournel enthusiastically heads for the hotel. Victor Emmanuel shows the letter to Lucienne's husband, Carlos Homenides de Histangua, a passionate and violent Spaniard. Carlos recognizes Lucienne's handwriting and assumes that she is trying to start an affair. In a fit of rage, he runs off to the hotel, with Victor Emmanuel, quick on his heels. All the characters meet at the La & Li Hotel, where all takes place at a fierce rate of opening and closing doors, spinning rooms, unexpected meetings and mistakes in identities, which reach their peak due to the uncanny resemblance between Victor Emmanuel and the drunk hotel porter Puche. The confusion persists even after all are reunited again at Victor Emmanuel's house, but eventually things clear up and as all good comedies end – all's well that ends well.
