Liz is a middle-aged doctor, and all she wants is a clean house and a tidy life. To keep her house clean she employs Matilde, a Brazilian maid; to keep her life tidy she marries Adam, a successful doctor. What Liz does not know, however, is that her sister, Sophie – who really loves cleaning, but has nothing to clean – has been doing the housework instead of Matilde. Matilde, for her part, hates cleaning, wants to be a comedian, and dreams of coming up with a joke that will make someone die laughing. Liz is also unaware that her husband, Adam, has fallen in love with one of his patients, a tempestuous South American woman named Ana. As the various secrets come to light and Liz's life devolves into a horrendous mess, she realizes, with the help of the women around her, that mess can sometimes contain the seeds of a new, different kind of order. This successful American play was a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
