In order to repair the overcoat, he approaches a tailor named Petrovich who advises him to have a new one made, but the cost of a new overcoat is beyond Akaky's meager salary. A generous work bonus which Bashmachkin receives allows KLP HYHQWXDOO\ WR SXUFKDVH WKH RYHUFRDW DQG ZKHQ LW ÀQDOO\ arrives in the hands of the tailor, Bashmachkin is unable to control his emotions and bursts into tears. His coworkers, realizing his excitement, throw a party in honor of the new overcoat and while on his way to the party Bashmachkin H[SHULHQFHV DV LI IRU WKH ÀUVW WLPH WKH KXVWOH DQG EXVWOH RI WKH street. At the party he is quite on his own and on his way home he encounters a couple of robbers who steal the overcoat. In an attempt to retrieve his overcoat, Bashmachkin runs from RQH SROLFH RIÀFHU WR WKH RWKHU EXW WR QR DYDLO +H LV WUHDWHG with harshness and scold. Humiliated and unwell he returns WR KLV ÁDW DQG GLHV
