The place: Jerusalem. The year: 1187. Saladin's Muslim army annihilates the Crusader force and rules Jerusalem. A young Crusader knight, captured in battle, is about to be put to death when Saladin pardons him and sets him free. Walking through Jerusalem, the Crusader happens to pass a house on fire, saves a girl from the flames and falls for her. The girl, Rachel, is the daughter of a rich Jewish merchant, Nathan the Wise. Nathan the Wise (Nathan der Weise) is a classic play by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, one of the German Enlightenment's most important playwrights. Published in 1779 and still performed today around the world, the play brings together Christians, Muslims and Jews, denounces religious bigotry and extolls tolerance and religious brotherhood.
