EIT Urban Mobility – Solving the mobility challenges facing our cities together! Cities are home to over 70 % of the European Union’s population and account for some 85 % of the EU’s GDP. Having urbanmobility systems that workwell is crucial for citizens’ lives and our economies. However, in many cities, increasing demand for urban mobility is taking us in the oppositedirection—road transport in cities is responsible for 40%of all CO2emissions. Congestion in theEU is often located inandaroundurban areas and is estimated tocost nearly EUR 130billionper year—more than 1%of the EU’s GDP. Inmany citiesmore than 50%of public urban space is taken up by roads and the space available for citizens for other uses such as work, trade, play, or social interaction is only one-sixth of that allocated tomobility. The currentmodel of urbanmobility is detrimental to the wellbeing of our citizens, our climate, and our economies. EITUrbanMobility’smission is toacceleratechange towards a sustainable model of urban mobility and liveable urban spaces. As the leadingEuropean innovationcommunity,we facilitatecollaboration between cities, industry, academia, research, and innovation to solve themost pressingmobility challenges of cities.
