The Italian tour of "Accidental Death of an Anarchist", to the audiences totaling 300,000 people, was part of the widespread campaign to bring to light the real perpetrators of the Milan massacre. "Accidental Death of an Anarchist" was not simply a play for touring. Based on a book "The state Massacre", published in 1970, and on actual court reports leaked to Fo's company during the trial, the play was constantly changed from day to day and was part of the widespread public discussion that was taking place around the events of the Milan massacre and 'the strategy of tension' that they created. The company was refused the use of a few theatres, but succeeded in packing thousands of people into other halls. The opening night played in front of a packed house despite anonymous bomb threats, the intervention of the Flying Squad, and complaints that an 'incident' was being created. In the past few years several productions of "Accidental Death of an Anarchist" have been produced outside Italy. The play was produced twice in Israel - directed by Michael Gurevitch at "Habimah" Theatre in 1981, and by Ilan Ronen in 1994 at Beit Lessin Theatre.

In the spring of 1970 the comrades who came to see our plays urged us to write a full- length play about the Milan bombings and the murder of Pinelli, discussing their causes and political consequences. The reason for this request was the fearful vacuum of information about Pinelli's death. After the initial shock the press was silent, and the official left- wing newspapers hadn't put themselves out beyond the odd sporadic comment like "it's a disconcerting business" . Dario Fo
