Systemic conditions affecting periodontitis in children and adolescents: A systematic literature review Kostiner H., Nishlus S., Blumer S. Dept. of Pediatric Dentistry, Maurice & Gabriella Goldschlager School of Medicine, Sackler Faculty of Medicine Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Epidemiologic studies indicate that gingivitis is a common finding in children and adolescents. These studies also reveal that although there is a much lower prevalence of destructive periodontal diseases in children than in adults, children can develop severe presentation of periodontitis. In some cases, this destructive disease is a manifestation of a known underlying systemic disease. In others, the underlying cause for increased susceptibility and early onset of disease is unknown. These diseases are often familial, suggesting a genetic predisposition for aggressive disease. Current modalities for managing periodontal diseases of children and adolescents include antibiotic therapy in combination with non-surgical and/

or surgical therapy. Early diagnosis ensures the greatest chance for successful treatment, hence the importance of children receiving a thorough periodontal examination as part of their routine dental visits. An updated classification of the periodontal manifestations and conditions affecting the course of periodontitis and the periodontal attachment apparatus as well as of developmental and acquired conditions, was introduced in 2017. The present article covers the systemic conditions that may reduce the host response in children and adolescents, thus, increasing their susceptibility to periodontal bone loss and ultimately early loss of teeth.
