FORMING COMMUNITY PROTECTION COMMITTEES AND TRAINING THEIR STAFF

STUDY AND TRAINING PROGRAMS | WELFARE Annual

The protection committees project has been in operation for six years in local and regional councils and in many communities throughout Israel. A protection committee is a communal committee of volunteers within the community of varied professional backgrounds - spiritual, legal, therapeutic, educational, medical, etc. Committee members are usually appointed by the community steering-committee and appointments are approved by the community leadership. The goal of a protection committee is to promote awareness of prevention and community protection, and education towards healthy sexuality via workshops, lectures, etc. They also serve as an informal reference point for consultation and reporting suspected maltreatment when mandatory reporting is inapplicable; they provide a support network for victims in cases of mandatory reporting who are in the care of welfare agencies and the legal system. Committees are accompanied by a community social worker from the social services department. To date, scores of training programs have been held at local and regional councils with population of tens of thousands of children, in collaboration with the communities' social services department. In 2019 protection committees operated in four regional councils - Jordan Valley, Yoav, Sdot Negev, Mateh Yehuda and Hispin. Target Population for 2019 included volunteers from the community and members of existing protection committees in local councils, most of whom are professionals, such as social workers, psychologists, lawyers, rabbis, etc.
